Architect: Arbor Vitae in association with Ferguson Architects

Two sculptures were commissioned for the WA Police Academy. A life size sculpture of a graduating police cadet, positioned at the entrance to the academy, is the feature of Tony and Ben Jones’ commission. The other work by Phil Gresley and Ahmad Abas embeds police service oath, in braille, into a series of shields that form a sculpture in the central lake.

Jurek Wyanbriec’s work intervenes in the entry to the building as ‘..a non-utilitarian art/object in a utilitarian space’. The piece is also intended as a metaphor for the passage of skills and knowledge from teacher to student.Stuart Green’s suspended metal panels perform a functional role and are also intended to reflect the activities within the building in terms of the generation and manipulation of ideas.

The commission comprises both interior and exterior artwork. The exterior work, a series of carved wooden totemic poles, features WA native bird species perched at the top, is intended to create a distinct building identity. The internal work aims to evoke a contemplative and calming atmosphere.

Rick Vermey created two works for this commission. A kinetic sculpture responsive to the climatic conditions of the region and a wall mural featuring more than 600 ceramic tiles highlighting self portraits of the school’s community.
