Emerging Curators

Showcasing the pre-eminent art collection in Western Australia

Emerging Curators

The Emerging Curators Program has two categories (visual arts and crafts and community collections), and two methods of application (by proposal and by expression of interest).

Categories

1 Visual Arts and Crafts

This category supports the skills development of new curators of contemporary visual arts and crafts.

The Emerging Curators Program – Visual Arts and Craft is part of the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy, a joint Federal and State Government funding initiative to benefit Western Australian individual artists, creating more opportunities for contemporary visual arts and craft practitioners across the States and Territories.

Please discuss your Proposal or Expression of Interest with the Project Officer for Visual Arts, Craft and Writing.

2 Community Collections

This category supports the skills development of new curators in the management and interpretation of community collections.

Funding for the Emerging Curator Program – Community Collections is a result of the Department’s response to the recommendations of the Museum Policy Reference Group report: Developing a Way Forward for Western Australia’s Heritage Collections and Collectors.

Please discuss your application or Expression of Interest with the Senior Policy Officer, Cultural Programs.

How to apply

There are two methods of application.

1 By Proposal

You You are encouraged to approach the approach the relevant Project Officer with your proposal for a high-quality professional development opportunity to gain direct experience in a major interstate or international institution or significant event.

  Assessment Criteria

The Panel assesses applications against the assessment criteria of the Arts Grants Program. In addition, applications must also demonstrate:

  • That the potential for skills development exceeds that currently available at a Western Australian event or institution, and
  • How participation will benefit the broader sector upon your return to Western Australia.

If you are applying to the Community Collections category you must also address:

  • How the proposal furthers the pursuit of excellence in collection management and interpretation in Western Australia.

2 By Expression of Interest

The Department generates a number of opportunities each year for Western Australian curators to gain direct experience of a major institution or significant event. Contact the relevant Officer to enquire about any upcoming Expressions of Interest.

  Assessment Criteria

Expressions of Interest will be invited through relevant networks and include assessment criteria specific to each opportunity.

Eligibility for all Applicants

In addition to the general eligibility requirements of the Arts Grants Program, applicants should be aware that the program is open to curators who consider themselves to be ‘emerging’. You may, however, be considered ‘established’ in other fields of artistic endeavour. Please discuss your eligibility with the relevant Project Officer.
