Professional artists return to school to share creative skills

Western Australian students will benefit from a new initiative to bring professional artists into public schools and universities to share their skills and improve young people’s access to quality arts education programs.

Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said WA would receive $280,000 for the first year of the four-year Artists in Residence (AIR) pilot program. This would be the highest amount awarded in Australia.

3 Acts of Murder exhibit in the State Library

Just because you give someone an idea for a murder, does that make you responsible for the crime? This question is explored in the true story telemovie 3 Acts of Murder premiering Sunday June 14, 2009 on ABC1 at 8:30pm.

To celebrate this Western Australian film, a special 3 Acts of Murder exhibit will be presented at the State Library in the Perth Cultural Centre.

Kids Day Out at the State Library

Culture and the Arts Minister John Day today officially opened a new children’s area at the State Library of Western Australia named ‘The Place’, during a ‘Kids Day Out’ at the library attended by children and families from throughout Perth.

Mr Day said ‘The Place’ was an important new direction for the library, providing an area for visiting school groups and families where children could explore books and stories and where reading, writing and literacy were celebrated.

“’The Place’ will play an increasingly significant role in the State Library as it nurtures the next generation of readers,” he said.

ThinIce and West Australian Opera to make music together

ThinIce and the West Australian Opera are on the road to creating an exciting large-scale production following a State Government grant of $410,000.

Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said that ThinIce had been awarded the grant through the State Government’s Major Production Fund.

“This funding will allow both companies to begin working together on securing presenting partners and national interest in a new production that will feature an extraordinary local, national and international cast and creative team,” Mr Day said.

Winner of 2009 Margaret Medcalf Award announced

A Western Australian award acknowledging written works that display excellence in referencing and research using archives, was announced today at a special ceremony at the State Records Office.

Isla Macphail has been awarded the 2009 Margaret Medcalf Award for her book, Highest Privilege and Bounden Duty: A study of Western Australian parliamentary elections 1829-1901. State Records Commissioner Ms Justine McDermott, accompanied by Margaret Medcalf, presented Ms Macphail with her award and a cheque for $1,000.

“Highest Privilege and Bounden Duty makes an important contribution to the teaching of Western Australian history, contributing to understandings of the creation of Western Australia’s political and electoral system.”

His Majesty's Theatre facade to be restored

The facade of the historic His Majesty’s Theatre will be restored, with work expected to begin in September 2009.

Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said funding for the restoration work was provided in the State Government’s 2009-10 Budget.

“The State-owned His Majesty’s Theatre is a premium performing arts venue in Perth and is an important part of this State’s history,” Mr Day said.

State Budget 2009-10: Perth Cultural Centre to be transformed by Budget

The Perth Cultural Centre and the wider community will benefit from a new allocation of $23million for asset investment in the State Budget, including $8million of recurrent funding.

Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said much of the asset investment expenditure, which would occur over three years, marked the start of transforming the Perth Cultural Centre into a vibrant precinct for all Western Australians to enjoy.

“The Perth Cultural Centre has suffered decades of neglect by successive governments so I am thrilled that this Liberal-National Government is fulfilling an election promise to start revitalising this precinct,” Mr Day said.

Nick Cave – the exhibition

Australian musician, songwriter and author Nick Cave is now the subject of his own exhibition which will be hosted by the Western Australian Museum – Perth from May - July 2009.

The exhibition was created and designed by the Arts Centre in Melbourne and is touring nationally in 2009.

Acting Chief Executive Officer of the WA Museum Diana Jones said the exhibition was an exciting opportunity to once again bring a contemporary music exhibition to the people of Western Australia.

Call for Submissions – Literary Awards Review

The Department of Culture and the Arts (DCA) is calling for submissions from authors, publishers, book sellers, librarians, academics and members of the public for the review of the Western Australian Premier’s Book Awards and the Australia-Asia Literary Award.

A review of both award schemes is underway and we are seeking your input to evaluate the awards and gather suggestions on how they could be delivered or improved in the future.
