Finalists for the 2009 WA Indigenous Art Awards announced
Finalists for Australia’s richest indigenous contemporary art awards have been announced by Culture and the Arts Minister John Day.
Mr Day congratulated the 15 artists and one artists’ group who have been selected as the finalists for this year’s Western Australian Indigenous Art Awards exhibition.
“In its second year, this award has gone from strength to strength, with 213 nominations received from arts organisations nationally. This is a significant increase on the 157 nominations submitted for the inaugural awards,” he said.

Grants program for artists with disabilities a first in WA
The recipients of the first grants program in Western Australia to support the professional practice of artists with disabilities were announced today.
Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said the Grants for Artists with Disabilities program supported nine individual artists to a total of $102,534.

Museum Week
From Roebourne to Ravensthorpe, and all points in between, galleries and museums across WA are putting on an exciting program of events for the 2009 Museums Week to entice Western Australians to come and visit.
May 16 – 24 is Museums Week. Expect to be wowed by the multitude of events and activities in WA’s museums and galleries. If you haven’t been to a museum for a while now would be a brilliant time to rediscover the treasures and stories they hold. Uncover fascinating events and people in WA’s history like 15 year old John Gaven, WA’s youngest hanged convict or simply find out how to conserve your own treasures.
“We are very excited about this year’s program” said Jane King, Chief Executive of Museums Australia’s WA branch. “We have a record number of events already listed and we hope to be able to keep adding them until Museums Week itself.”

Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said the projects receiving funding in this round demonstrated the diversity and strength of Western Australian music.

Arts facilities $1.5million upgrade
The Liberal-National Government is providing nearly $1.5million for upgrading arts organisations’ facilities.
Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said the funding would provide infrastructure which enhanced public engagement, increased the quality of audience experience and improved access to arts and cultural activities.

Jury for international sculpture competition announced.
Culture and the Arts Minister John Day has announced the jury for ‘situate’ - the international sculpture competition to find a new $1million artwork for Forrest Place.
